« Les Garrigues », and their neighborhoods, are solar Terroirs in the Appellation. They gave the Cuvée a lot of stamina and consistency.
The vintage

Understanding and succeeding this vintage required, indeed, presence in the Vineyard, careful work, experience, and even, clearly, a genuine expertise...
Winter temperatures amongst the mildest in the decade, rainfall amounts amongst the highest ever in winter, among the lowest ever in spring, and a nice output of grapes throughout the Rhone cépages : everything would raise hope of an early vintage, the ever expected Vintage, satisfactory both in terms of quantity and of quality ! But it was not counting on an unusually cool and rainy summer... Vignerons are soon confronted with quite a few difficulties, the trickiest one being the management of diseases…
The first three weeks of September revive the vintage... September, the month of wine !
2014 demanded, especially during the final weeks, hard, incessant work. The vines were in demand. It was crucial to understand, to be able to anticipate...This required a bit of wisdom, reason, intuition...
A vintage for Vignerons, indeed. And the best ones did perform with talent. They are now rewarded. As for the others, alas... There, is the whole difference

The 2014 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes checks in as a blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre that’s from the Les Garrigues, Les Dentelles and La Bouissiere lieux-dits. Notes of charcoal, licorice, ground herbs, and darker raspberry and blackberry fruit give way to a medium-bodied, firm, focused and polished Gigondas that will drink well for 7-8 years.

Cask sample. Mid to dark crimson. This is much more interesting on the nose than the Vacqueyras 2014 from the same producer. There are dried herbs and a little gaminess with some of Grenache’s sweet fragrance. Very juicy. Again, much less ballast and structure than usual. Falls away a bit on the end.

Brilliant ruby. Heady aromas of black raspberry, cherry liqueur, spicecake and candied lavender, energized by a smoky mineral topnote. Spicy and incisive on the palate, offering concentrated bitter cherry and dark berry liqueur flavors that spread out slowly with aeration. The persistent, spice-tinged finish features smooth tannins and an emphatic echo of juicy boysenberry.
