The vintage

Étrange et paradoxal…Ce millésime nous a réservé bien des surprises, et soulève toujours des interrogations. Pourtant qualifié de « Grand » par certains Vignerons, sa forte hétérogénéité, selon les secteurs, nous impose une certaine mesure…
C’est la première fois que nous observons une telle hétérogénéité entre les Appellations, avec des rendements très bas, surtout sur les vieilles vignes de Grenache. Privilège de notre métier, nous avons pu sélectionner drastiquement les plus beaux jus au sein d’une même Appellation, en travaillant finement au niveau des divers secteurs de chaque Appellation. Et, naturellement, nous avons fait appel aux ressources de la totalité de nos Domaines Vignerons, qui ont répondu présents en dépit d’une récolte minuscule… Qu’ils en soient ici remerciés. Il nous faut encore ajouter que le cours des Vins a flambé de 30 à 40% sur Châteauneuf du Pape... Mais, au final, le résultat est là : les Vins nous charment déjà par leur fruité gourmand, éclatant ! Les nez sont délicats, les bouches déliées…

The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes is cut from the same cloth yet has slightly more density and richness. Black raspberries, blackberries, crushed violets, and peppered meat notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, textured, elegant red that has a supersized personality. Based on 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, 50% destemmed, and brought up in once- and twice-used oak, it’s going to keep for 10-15 years.

Blackish crimson. Thick and almost heavy. Rather exaggerated and stolid. Mass rather than appeal. Masses of tannins as though from thick-skinned grapes. just a bit too like an essence rather than a wine. But with time in bottle it may emerge a swan. Very drying on the end at present.

Very ripe and lush in feel, with slow rolling waves of warmed cassis, steeped plum and raspberry preserve rolling through, lined with red tea and anise notes and carried by very silky, yet persistent structure. Fruit-driven, but with a fine minerality buried on the finish. Very nicely done.
