The vintage

Understanding and succeeding this vintage required, indeed, presence in the Vineyard, careful work, experience, and even, clearly, a genuine expertise...
Winter temperatures amongst the mildest in the decade, rainfall amounts amongst the highest ever in winter, among the lowest ever in spring, and a nice output of grapes throughout the Rhone cépages : everything would raise hope of an early vintage, the ever expected Vintage, satisfactory both in terms of quantity and of quality ! But it was not counting on an unusually cool and rainy summer... Vignerons are soon confronted with quite a few difficulties, the trickiest one being the management of diseases…
The first three weeks of September revive the vintage... September, the month of wine !
2014 demanded, especially during the final weeks, hard, incessant work. The vines were in demand. It was crucial to understand, to be able to anticipate...This required a bit of wisdom, reason, intuition...
A vintage for Vignerons, indeed. And the best ones did perform with talent.

Deep blackish crimson. Very spicy and high toned. Intense nose. Sinewy and, while being voluptuous in texture, there is more of a nod to the energy and life of a Cornas than in the same producer’s Coteaux 2014 wine. It’s sweet and much softer than the usual Cornas but perhaps this was just how Michel Tardieu thought he could make the most of what Nature delivered in 2014. Cool finish. Lots of pleasure here – but so should there be for this price. Seems expensive relative to their Côte Rôtie. Very odd that this is more expensive than the same producer’s Côte Rôtie.

Dark purple. Pungent cherry pit, blueberry, olive and violet aromas are complemented by hints of peppery spices, woodsmoke and smoky minerals. Succulent and expansive on the palate, offering gently sweet, deeply concentrated black and blue fruit flavors and a licorice pastille quality. Concentrated yet surprisingly lively and precise, finishing with superb clarity, slow-building tannins and serious, fruit-driven persistence.

Le Cornas 2014, très cassis au nez, sèveux, offre en bouche une matière dense, des tanins encore abrupts, et un fruit pour le moment un rien linéaire.
